4 Germans arrested over tribute at Hitler’s Austrian birthplace

Four Germans were detained by authorities for placing white roses in memory of Adolf Hitler at the residence where the Nazi leader was born in Austria.

Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, in Braunau am Inn. Following heated discussions about what to do with the murderous dictator’s birthplace, efforts began in October 2023 to convert it into a police station to prevent it from becoming a pilgrimage site.

Two couples from Bavaria visited the property last Saturday on the anniversary of Hitler’s birth. They took pictures in front of the house and laid down white roses, with one of the women performing the Nazi salute, according to police.

Patrolling officers escorted them to a police station for interrogation. The woman claimed that the salute was not meant seriously, but authorities said they discovered a chat with the other detainees on her mobile phone containing Nazi-related messages and images.

All four individuals will be reported to prosecutors on suspicion of violating Austrian laws prohibiting the display of Nazi symbols, the police said.

Every year around Hitler’s birthday, officials increase patrols around the house where he was born. The state-owned building is now being remodeled into a police station which will also host human-rights training courses.

Hitler rose to power in Nazi Germany in the 1930s and led the country into World War II. His regime was responsible for the genocide of six million Jews during the Holocaust and the deaths of countless other minorities. Hitler’s warmongering ultimately led to Germany’s downfall and his own suicide in 1945 as allied forces closed in on Berlin.
