Poland plans to invest €2.3 billion to bolster security along its eastern border with Russia and Belarus, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Saturday.
“We will invest 10 billion zlotys (€2.3 billion) in the security of our border with Belarus and Russia,” the Polish leader told a press conference. It will be an investment “in our security, and above all in a secure eastern border,” Tusk said.
Emphasizing the country’s strategic position on the eastern flank of both NATO and the European Union, Tusk highlighted Poland’s responsibility for European security.
“We have begun these works, to make Poland’s border a safe one in times of peace, and impenetrable for an enemy in times of war,” he said.
Poland’s border with Belarus has been a flashpoint for several years due to increasing numbers of immigrants seeking to cross the Polish frontier. In 2021, Warsaw accused Minsk of letting in thousands of undocumented migrants through the border into the EU, accusations that Belarus denies. Tusk last weekend reiterated his belief that Prime Minister Alexander Lukashenko’s regime in Belarus is “co-organizing this practice” as Minsk has shown an increasingly aggressive stance toward Poland.
Tusk on May 11 said Poland is facing a “hybrid war” in illegal immigration from Belarus, the Polish Press Agency reported. “There will be no limit of funds when it comes to the security of Poland,” he said.
