Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico made his first public appearance since being critically wounded in an assassination attempt last month, and used a pre-recorded video message to blame the attack on his political opponents.
In a 14-minute speech posted on Facebook, Fico — who was shot multiple times in the abdomen at a political event on May 15 in the central Slovak town of Handlová — said he had forgiven his assailant.
“I forgive him, and let him sort out what he did and why he did it in his own head,” Fico said, while acknowledging the attack had caused him “a lot of pain and suffering.”
But his political rivals didn’t get off so easy, with Fico claiming the gunman “was an activist of the Slovak opposition … a messenger of evil and political hatred that the politically unsuccessful and frustrated opposition has fanned to unmanageable proportions.
“The opposition will have to think about this. If it continues as it is now, the horror of May 15, which you all had the opportunity to see practically live, will continue and there will be more victims,” he added.
Fico’s attacker was identified as Juraj Cintula, 71, a former security guard and poet who allegedly told authorities he disagreed with the Slovak leader’s pro-Russia politics.
Fico added that he would “gradually” return to his duties “at the end of June or [early] July.”
