Slovenia slammed Bosnia and Herzegovina for preventing Slovenian citizens from voting in the current EU election, saying the move would hinder Sarajevo’s European accession progress.
Members of Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik’s coalition this week blocked the adoption of a decision that would allow citizens of Slovenia, Romania and Poland living in Bosnia and Herzegovina cast ballots in the EU election in the diplomatic missions of those three countries.
According to the Slovenian interior ministry, 1,977 Slovenian citizens residing in Bosnia and Herzegovina are eligible to vote in the European Parliament election.
Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon called the move “unacceptable,” pointing out that Bosnia had just recently received the green light to start accession negotiations for EU membership.
Slovenian President NataÅ¡a Pirc Musar stressed that Bosnia’s recent moves “hinder its European progress” and were incomprehensible since Slovenia is “one of the most active countries in supporting Bosnia and Herzegovina on its European path.”
Some Bosnian officials themselves also are criticizing the blocking of voting. Foreign Minister Elmedin Konaković sent letters to his Slovenian, Romanian and Polish counterparts saying that recent events “demonstrate a destructive intent to damage bilateral relations” with Bosnia’s EU allies.
The move was carried out under “the malignant Russian influence, which is increasingly gaining momentum” in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Konaković added.
