South Africa’s president won’t resign despite ANC losing majority for first time

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called for unity after his African National Congress party failed to win a majority, marking a new era for Africa’s most advanced economy.

It’s the first time the ANC, once led by Nelson Mandela, has failed to win a majority at an election since the end of white minority rule in the early 1990s. The ANC will now likely turn to a political rival for the support it needs to govern in coalition.

“We have heard the voices of our people and we must respect their choices and their wishes,” Ramaphosa said. “The people of South Africa expect their leaders to work together to meet their needs.

“This is a time for all of us to put South Africa first.”

The ANC is still the largest party, having won 40.2 percent of votes, but the 159 seats it secured are well short of the 200 required for a majority in the 400-seat National Assembly. In the previous parliament it had 230 seats.

The main opposition party, the white-led Democratic Alliance, won 21.8 percent support. New left-wing party uMkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation), which is backed by former President Jacob Zuma, came third with 14.6 percent.
