U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Donald Trump late Saturday after a shooter opened fire at the former president’s campaign rally in western Pennsylvania, according to a White House official.
The president then left Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, to return to Washington, hours after he called for unity and denounced political violence in a quickly arranged appearance on camera Saturday night, condemning the violence at Trump’s campaign event.
“Look, there’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s sick,” Biden said in comments to reporters. He called for “unit[ing] this country,” adding that “we cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.”

He said that the Trump rally “should’ve been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem,” and “the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard of. It’s just not appropriate.”
“Everybody must condemn it,” Biden said. “Everybody.”
The president gave remarks at the emergency briefing room at a police station in Rehoboth Beach roughly two hours after a fatal shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The president, who had been attending Mass Saturday evening, learned of the incident and wanted to address the nation as soon as he was fully briefed, said a source familiar with the president’s movements. Biden left Rehoboth late Saturday night to return to the White House.
The former president was on stage when a gunman opened fire, as people in the crowd screamed and ducked for cover. Trump, who had blood on his face, was rushed off the stage. He is “fine,” his campaign said, and was taken to a local medical facility to be examined.
One attendee was killed, as was the shooter. Two other people were critically injured, according to the U.S. Secret Service.
Biden, who has decried political violence and ran on a message to “restore the soul of the nation” in 2020, must now face an election in which shots were fired at his opponent’s campaign rally.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who was also briefed on the shooting, said she is praying for Trump, his family and others impacted by the “senseless” violence.
