Trump’s X interview livestream goes down, Musk blames ‘massive’ cyberattack

Elon Musk’s livestreamed interview with former U.S. President Donald Trump on X was taken offline in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after an outage Musk blamed on a “massive” cyberattack.

“There appears to be a massive DDOS attack on 𝕏,” Musk said in a post on his social media network, referring to a distributed denial-of-service attack, in which massive amounts of internet traffic are directed at websites and services, causing them to go offline. The interview proceeded around 40 minutes later with a smaller number of listeners, with Musk saying the unedited audio would be posted after it concluded.

The incident was reminiscent of last year’s disastrous launch of the presidential campaign of Ron DeSantis on Musk’s platform, which was also marred by technical problems.

Musk’s recent descent into posting innuendo, half-truths and lies on his platform has caused concern among lawmakers around the world. In the U.K., Musk upset lawmakers over X’s role in the race riots that rocked the country over the past few weeks, after sharing false information that Britain was going to open detainment camps for rioters.

On Monday, ahead of the planned interview, Musk got into a scrap with Europe’s Digital Commissioner Thierry Breton, after the latter reminded the world’s richest man of his legal obligation to stop the “amplification of harmful content” on his platform. Musk responded with a meme containing the words: “Take a big step back and literally, fuck your own face!”
