Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that “serious” members of U.S. President Donald Trump’s team will travel to Ukraine this week, the first such visit since Trump took office.
Zelenskyy did not specify who would be part of the American delegation but said the trip would take place before the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 14.
“This week, some serious figures from President Trump’s team will be in Ukraine, even before the Munich Conference,” Zelenskyy said according to Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.
Zelenskyy is set to attend the conference himself, and said Monday he would meet with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance on the sidelines of the event.
The Ukrainian leader also said Kyiv was “working on” organizing a meeting with Trump. Last week, Trump said he would “probably” meet with Zelenskyy in the coming days.
Kyiv is trying to win over the White House ahead of any negotiations with Russia to end its full-scale war, which it has been waging for almost three years.
Trump has repeatedly expressed skepticism about providing further U.S. military aid for Ukraine and has called for peace talks. Kyiv, meanwhile, has ruled out any settlement that involves conceding territory to Moscow.
In recent days, Zelenskyy has dangled allowing the U.S. to develop Ukraine’s natural resources, including rare earths, as a tactic to keep Trump on side.
“The Americans helped the most, and therefore the Americans should earn the most,” Zelenskyy said Friday in an interview with Reuters. “I would also like to talk about this with President Trump.”
