U.S. President Donald Trump told Keir Starmer that Washington doesn’t need U.K. aircraft carriers in its strikes against Iran, accusing the British prime minister of seeking to “join wars after we’ve already won.”
Trump’s comments late Saturday came as the U.S. and Israel continued to launch airstrikes on Iran as the conflict entered its second week. His criticism also came as the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier is being prepared to sail to the Persian Gulf, according to U.K. media reports.
The British government “is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East.” Trump said in a post on social media. “That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer — But we will remember,” he said.
“We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!” Trump added.
After initial hesitation, Starmer granted Washington permission to strike Iranian missile stores from Britain’s military base at Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands. The delay led Trump to criticize his ally repeatedly.
The U.S. is also using an air base in the U.K. after Starmer gave permission for “defensive” American action against Iranian missile sites from U.K. bases. Four B-1 bombers arrived at Fairford base in Gloucestershire on Friday and Saturday.
Meanwhile, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair also criticized Starmer for not supporting the U.S. action in Iran right from the start. Blair, who led the U.K. into the Iraq war, told a private event that Washington was an “indispensable cornerstone” of Britain’s security and that allies should “show up” regardless of who the current president is, according to media reports.
Trump on Saturday said the U.S. planned more strikes against Iran, promising to widen the targets in the Islamic Republic. “Today Iran will be hit very hard!” he wrote on Truth Social. “Under serious consideration for complete destruction and certain death, because of Iran’s bad behavior, are areas and groups of people that were not considered for targeting up until this moment in time,” he said.
